Writing: A short Report (Learning object: Business report). Once you have watched the videos and read the articles and by using the information you just learnt from activity 1. It is time to create a Short Report.

Executive Summary.

Universal multinational pharmaceutical (UP),  a company that develops medical installed in Atlanta (Georgia) has developed three more of its products, one of these products for weight loss promises to provide excellent results, and another drug is made to treat River blindness with a very high investment to develop and help thousands of people from Africa. These products have no profit. Going through the current issue of his medicine for asthma that has worsened their overall image, and the medicine tests for heart disease PX200, UP must decide if true to its principles and improve its image, or focus on the economic dividends.

Findings.

Thanks to the research and development the drug for diabetes and Parkinson it has showned a major improvement in people affected by this disease. However, the drug treatment for asthma was withdrawn from the market for its harmful side effects toapatients. The company's image was heavily damaged and  raised questions in the media.
The new drug development to river blindness to help people in Africa it’s a big chance to change and improve the image for the company, because the drug has a high probability to success. To develop this drug the company needs over 1000 million of dollars, but in other ways the company has no chance to benefit for this, the reason is because people that needs this medicine dont have the budget and have vey low income, and have not resources to pay for this, so UP is not a charity organization. The company needs to know how to develop this drug without economic risk while improving its image.
In a case of PX200, this drug shown more benefits than side effects, for instance; The majority of patients have receive lower blood pressure and less pain. Some people have only experienced breathing difficulties and other unpleasant effects.
In the case of weight loss products, the test made in animals showed that some of these animals got sick in early stage trials, however the product promises to generate big profits once it is launched.

Conclusions.

It is very important to restore the company image  due to the negative input from the media , and this puts in risk the company future with him customers and consumers. So the company must reconsider to develop this drug without taking any profit, and maybe use the profits of other products for this. The company must be find the balance in his Ethical policy and the profits. In the three cases, the River Blindness is the most opportunity to change the global company image and recovery the confidence in customers and consumers.

  • Option 1: choose a Colombian company that exports any product to the United States or Canada.

Alpina

Alpina was founded in Colombia by two Swiss inmigrants in 1945. They settled in Sopó since in this sector had a large milk production and this would facilitate the production of cheese. Also it was close to Bogota, the place where the entrepreneurs decided to start selling their products. The founders started buying 500 bottles of milk per day. While one of them went in search of milk, the other was staying at the factory preparing cheese, which was sold later with the best quality and according to highest hygiene standards.
The cheese had very good results in sales, its main customers were the inhabitants of the savannah but very quickly they were visited by long lines of cars from Bogota, from where people came on weekends to buy cheese snacks. As the line of cars was long, the entrepreneurs decided to expand their restaurant in order to better attend costumers who visited.
Over the next 5 years the company grew and over time acquired new technologies that allowed them to make new products. They received some bank loans to expand its production plant and they also increased their administrative staff.
25 years later, sales of the company had spread nationally, products aimed at specific market segments, such as women and children, achieved 20,000 to 21,000 customers across the country. Starting the 90s, Alpine began its exports to Venezuela and Ecuador, achieving great sales. In 2000, after obtaining the ISO 9001 certificate of the Colombian Institute of Technical Standards, Icontec, managed to enter the US market.
It was a big challenge for the company to conquer the North American market. But a dream was fulfilled. They began addressing the Latino community in the United States but over time managed to conquer other ethnic groups who are now loyal customers of Alpina Colombian products.
Exports to the US rose from US $ 200 billion in 2000 to US $ 550 billion in 2002; six years later sales had increased to US $ 676 billion.
“Due to the increase in sales volume in the United States and negotiations since 2004 between Colombia and the United States on a possible free trade agreement between the two countries, and in order to be the first in the Colombian dairy sector to benefit from its advantages, Alpina opened a management facility in the US. "(Van den Berghe, 2015)
From the year 2011, Alpine stopped producing the products sold in the United States in Colombia. Alpina managed to make several strategic alliances with dairy companies in the United States, which began to manufacture products for the North American market. Meanwhile, the company made a large investment of US $ 20 million in factories in Colombia, this in order to improve production in the country and not to neglect the domestic market, acquiring technology and the most advanced production techniques.
Currently Alpina sells in 7 states on the East Coast of the United States, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Connecticut, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The goal of the company is to extend operations to the state of Texas, Washington and Ohio. It is expected to sell US $ 150 million in 5 years.
Alpina has won many awards, not only national but also international. "The international qualifiers granted Alpine an AA rating in 2012. In financial market terms this means a strong competitive position, a low of risk investment and high liquidity, since 80% of its liabilities long term"(Van den Berghe, 2015).
Alpina is not just a company focused on generating profits and profitability which is why it has been winning many awards. Alpina is committed to education, the environment and communities. It funds various foundations, research institutes to improve production processes, children and improvement in feeding its people, not only in Colombia but also in Ecuador and Peru.

"Merco, a transnational company, which monitors companies in several countries, among which is Colombia, conducted a study of the management level of more than 1000 companies in 2012. Alpina was awarded 4th prize in the category “company with the best reputation” in the country and 2nd for the best reputation in the food sector of Colombia. Also it won the 4th place among the most socially responsible companies, as they generate economic growth in harmony with society and the environment and generate collective prosperity in the community. "(Van den Berghe, 2015).
Alpina is a company with European heritage, but was founded and developed in Colombia and now uses the Latin American countries of Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela, looking for commercial and industrial integration of these brother countries.
